Reading

How much "reading" did you do today, just in preparing for class? --if you looked in a mirror --did you read your look? --and did you "read" your outfit? --how did you use your senses?

  1. I read my breakfast, the weather, the fact it was still dark outside and I should still be in bed. I read with my senses and body, I know it's cold, that coffee tastes like coffe, that it was dark and frosty outside. I read words and pictures online when I checked my blogs. I put make up on so people could read my face how I wanted them to read it.

    1. --I "read" my breakfast also --should have --could have been a longer, bigger "book" however --but I'll read another breakfast --and I will "break" my "fast" --except for dreams --which I'll also "read"...

  2. Before I came to class, I checked my email and Facebook.(I guess it is a kind of reading?) In class, I enjoy looking at myself through the large window in the second floor of the Art and Design Building. I also have some funny poses while Thylias took photos of class in the empty room.!!! Then, class visits faculty show and read interesting artworks :)

  3. I agree that the body is a book. It, I think, is the most complex and magical creation we can ever fathom in this life, which we continue creating every day and which, with a keen eye, unfolds into vast and endless layers of meaning and complexities, simplicities, connectivities, that are always interrelated and always corresponding in new and intricate ways. I think that we have to learn to read ourselves, and thence can read the world around us in deeper and more profound ways. My project is going to have something to do with this- actually a lot to do with the human as a book, which filters all experiences and readings from the outside world into an internal landscape that is rich and tactile in feeling, though invisible. I want to make these things visible. I want to really delve into this translation of internal to the readable in tactile ways, as we experience them in real life.

    2. It seems as if we think in a similar manner! When I wrote the blog post that you commented on yesterday I was thinking about the body as a book as well. Our body is definitely a spine that absorbs new knowledge (power) and changes with time....both physically, mentally, and emotionally. This is also something that makes me excited for the final project idea.

Regarding how much reading we do...it is done all the time! Reading people is one aspect of people that I do on a constant basis. How is this person feeling, thinking about me, about life? I have more to say but have to go now! BYE!

  5. --and each interaction, each intimacy with anything (including "atmosphere") can and should be "read" --don't fossils tell "stories"? --and isn't anything a form of "book"? --and "tattooing" seems to understand certain literal components and similarities between skin and "pages" --chapters of the "feet", for instance, chapters of ears, nose, etcetera --to be continued --even as this body (or ay other) breaks down --decomposes into other chapters, minerals, elements, and so forth --to be continued --to be recycled....

    1. I have never thought of the idea of the body as a book, but it is very interesting. What you have said about tattoos, for example, makes a lot of sense; it's as if the skin is being used as a page or a canvas. Although I have thought about it, I would never get a tattoo because of their permanence and irrevocability - this is perhaps because my "book" or story is always changing, and I would never want to write something on the book of my body that I couldn't take back, because I (and my story) change too often.

In response to your original question, this morning I read emails, the bus schedule to get to North Campus for class, and a few pages of a Cosmopolitan magazine. I did not actually "read" my outfit this morning (except, perhaps, when I looked in the mirror) because I had already picked out my clothes for today last night. In terms of my senses, I noticed the biting cold this morning while I waited at the bus stop for the Commuter North bus, and I ate a delicious, ripe pear for breakfast.

  6. This is late but I did write this down in my book last class. That morning I read the mirror to brush the teeth. I read my face for application of make up. Read the environment outside to establish suitable clothes. Also ready my breakfast, my journey to the class and read my text message.
